IN-CHARACTER INFORMATION

Name: Lieutenant Nyota Uhura
Fandom: Star Trek AOS
Age: 26ish
Canon Point: The end of Into Darkness.
Original Universe or Alternate Universe? Original (though god I suppose technically she's a canon AU :P)

Personality: Uhura is, first and foremost, a woman who knows what she wants and goes after it with complete determination. She decided that she would do well enough in her studies to earn a place on Starfleet's newest flagship, the Enterprise, and by god, she did it. Nor was she about to let Spock interfere with his worries about "favoritism" because she damn well earned her place, and ultimately, she earned her place on the bridge crew of that same ship.

She is a woman who can take care of herself, and doesn't take crap from anyone. Even notorious ladies-man James T. Kirk was unable to get under her skin - or even get her first name from her - no matter how much he wheedled or tried to turn on the charm. She remained unmoved and contemptuous of him throughout their time at the academy.

Uhura is also a woman who plays hard as well as works hard - she has an active social life, a number of hobbies, a solid group of friends - generally, outside of her Starfleet duties (which she takes very seriously) she's a pretty average young woman. She is also nurturing and empathetic with those she cares for, as evidenced by her reaction to the destruction of Vulcan - she was concerned about Spock, and offered comfort without being pushy or judging him or assuming what he would need. Their relationship is far from perfect - his logic sometimes drives her to distraction, of course, but she simultaneously appreciates his differences while also seeing his humanity, and acting as an emotional support for him.

Her relationship with Kirk is something else entirely, beginning in a very hostile way, but over the course of the first film, Uhura begins to see the ways in which he and Spock are able to complement each other and understands the motivations behind his actions. She comes to respect him and now accepts him as both her captain and, perhaps, maybe even a friend.

She is smart, she is proud of her accomplishments, ambitious, willing to stand up for what she believes in, even putting herself at risk on Kronos, facing down armed and angry klingons with only her wits to get her out.

As a communication officer, she understands the power of words, but also the power of context and culture on those words - she's been trained not just in languages and how to speak them but also diplomacy, as one of Starfleet's primary objectives is as a diplomatic corps. This means she's good at empathizing with others and picking up on cultural cues as well as just technically being able to speak many languages.

She can be short-sighted at times (see also: her three-year dismissal of Kirk as an idiot hick) but she is unfailingly loyal to those who have earned her respect and trust.

Background: Uhura @ Memory Alpha and Uhura @ Memory Beta as I may occasionally pull info from the comics and other ancillary materials.

SAMPLES

NETWORK SAMPLE: [Uhura flips on the device, clearly more interested in the tech than in actually communicating with others. Knowing her, she'll probably be pulling it apart and putting it back together again later.]

Testing. This is Lieutenant Uhura, of the Federation Starship Enterprise. [She finally looks straight into the camera, her face schooled into a calm expression, and her voice similarly modulated in tone.] I need to know if anyone here is familiar with the Federation, or Starfleet.
