eleventh translation // action

[It's a nice day. The air is warm, the sun is out, and one Lieutenant Uhura is out with it, in full force. She's eschewed her winter uniform for one better suited to warm weather - that's right, she's back in her Starfleet-issue miniskirt, hips swaying, ponytail swinging, black boots crunching on the ground as she walks purposefully from the house.

Normally, she'd be heading towards the library, but it's far too nice a day for that. She does have a book under her arm, but she's heading for the bridge, clearly ready to get some fresh air.

In spite of the recent rash of disappearances, and violence, she's determined to enjoy the weather while it lasts. She may even be humming to herself.]

The smell most be lovely.

[identity profile] 20abyssinian.livejournal.com 2010-03-31 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
Mm. It's nice.

[He nods to her book. He'll try this social thing.]

What are you reading?

[identity profile] lt-linguist.livejournal.com 2010-03-31 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
[She shows it to him, not that it would be much help. It's not written in any Earth language.]

It's poetry.

[identity profile] 20abyssinian.livejournal.com 2010-03-31 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
...I don't recognize the language.

[Still, there is some interest in his expression.]

[identity profile] lt-linguist.livejournal.com 2010-03-31 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
No, I don't suppose you do. It's not an Earth language. It's Vulcan.

[identity profile] lt-linguist.livejournal.com 2010-03-31 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. It's a language spoken on another planet, by another species, in my world.

[identity profile] 20abyssinian.livejournal.com 2010-03-31 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
Oh. [He should expect things like this by now.]

You...like other languages then?

[identity profile] lt-linguist.livejournal.com 2010-03-31 04:56 am (UTC)(link)
I study them for a living, you might say. [She smiles.] What do you do?

[identity profile] 20abyssinian.livejournal.com 2010-03-31 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
Florist. [And that's all he's saying.]

[identity profile] lt-linguist.livejournal.com 2010-03-31 04:49 pm (UTC)(link)
That must be very interesting. I have a couple of friends back home who are botanists, but I've never met a professional florist before.

[identity profile] 20abyssinian.livejournal.com 2010-03-31 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never met a linguist before. [He actually tries smiling but all that happens is his face loses any tension and relaxes.]

[identity profile] lt-linguist.livejournal.com 2010-03-31 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
[She won't miss the change in his expression. She's used to it. So would you, if your boyfriend was a Vulcan. Score one for Uhura.]

You could teach me some about flowers, and I could teach you some about their names, maybe?

[identity profile] 20abyssinian.livejournal.com 2010-03-31 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
[And he blinks.]

You might like learning about the language of flowers more.

[identity profile] lt-linguist.livejournal.com 2010-03-31 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
That may very well be. I like learning anything, really.

[identity profile] 20abyssinian.livejournal.com 2010-03-31 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Most don't. [It's a compliment even if it sounds like an obvious fact.]

[identity profile] lt-linguist.livejournal.com 2010-03-31 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
That's true. Knowledge is pretty highly valued in my world, but even so, there are quite a few who don't bother with it.

[identity profile] 20abyssinian.livejournal.com 2010-03-31 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. [Just a moment of hesitation.] I'll teach you though, Uhura.

[identity profile] 20abyssinian.livejournal.com 2010-03-31 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Mm. [There's that moment of another failed smile again.]

[identity profile] lt-linguist.livejournal.com 2010-04-01 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
[Grin! More points to Uhura.]

[identity profile] 20abyssinian.livejournal.com 2010-04-01 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
[He shifts a little like that is really going to help him come up with something to say.] Have a nice walk.

[identity profile] lt-linguist.livejournal.com 2010-04-01 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
You, too. See you around, Aya.
