thirteenth translation // action

[Uhura is on the porch today, surrounded by what looks like the insides of an old-fashioned transistor radio. She is utterly absorbed in messing about with the various wires and metal bits - she's been so busy with these experiments lately that she's kind of missed the fact that an experiment is going on.

After all, she can't see the thought bubbles if she doesn't even look up from her little wires.

Her current thoughts are full of wiring, circuitry and strange mathematical symbols, along with a smattering of other languages. There are some thoughts running by in English, though.

Like ((A signal boost would require a break in the barrier, but a break in the barrier would require a significant surge of power. What sort of power, is yet to be determined...))

Or ((Radio frequences are more than likely present, but I'd need to encrypt any messages and the likelihood of tampering is high...))

Or ((I wonder if Spock and Mal should meet...))]

They allowed us this, which, yes, could potentially be used as weapons against them. If we're clever enough.

((And we are clever enough.))

No doubt they've put some kind of precautions in place to prevent that from happening.

There are always loopholes. I know all the statistics, but it's not going to stop me from trying. It's my duty.

[Arumat just might be smiling a tiny bit now.]

Spoken like a true officer.

Now I know the commission papers aren't lying. [Have a grin.] Besides, I'd never hear the end of it from my captain if I wasn't able to make a full report of my attempts to get out of here, once I make it back.

Let me see it.

[Arumat will just sort of hold out his hand expectantly-- he's not exactly the most polite person in the world, and he's used to being the one giving orders.]

((So very imperious. Going to check my work like a good commanding officer. [And have some Swahili.]))

[She'll hand over the gutted radio, already with signs of her modifications in the rewiring she'd been doing.]

[He'll study it for a moment, head canted to one side just slightly as images of circuits fill the thought bubble above his own head. Then, he'll tug out a capacitor and a semiconductor, move them slightly, and place them back in before handing it back to her.]

There would have been harmonic distortion if you'd left those where they were.

[Smile.] ((What a Spock thing to do.))

Thanks. I'm still trying to figure out some of the wiring on this. It's a lot more primitive than anything I've worked with before.

[Arumat makes Spock look like a social butterfly.]

It's far more primitive than the technology we have in my time as well. Ancient Earth technology, from the looks of it.

(It's completely useless anywhere else, but it might be our best hope here.)

[Uhura goes for that kind of thing.]

It's a good 250 years in my past, that's for sure. A museum piece. But I do what I can.

[A smirk tugs at the corner of his lips.]

You Earthlings always were on the slow side with technology.

[But it's not said maliciously, more with a tone of amusement.]

Where I come from, it's all sort of relative. Vulcans had warp technology for centuries before we even thought up the steam engine, but there are lots of civilizations still evolving.

And they will continue to evolve as long as there is no outside interference. Such is the nature of the universe.

No, but I have acquaintances in the Space Reconnaissance Force.
