thirteenth translation // action

[Uhura is on the porch today, surrounded by what looks like the insides of an old-fashioned transistor radio. She is utterly absorbed in messing about with the various wires and metal bits - she's been so busy with these experiments lately that she's kind of missed the fact that an experiment is going on.

After all, she can't see the thought bubbles if she doesn't even look up from her little wires.

Her current thoughts are full of wiring, circuitry and strange mathematical symbols, along with a smattering of other languages. There are some thoughts running by in English, though.

Like ((A signal boost would require a break in the barrier, but a break in the barrier would require a significant surge of power. What sort of power, is yet to be determined...))

Or ((Radio frequences are more than likely present, but I'd need to encrypt any messages and the likelihood of tampering is high...))

Or ((I wonder if Spock and Mal should meet...))]

Ah. Well, if nothing else, he is a Turtle of his word.

...

{Oh shell, what does this mean? Is the Star Trek series a communication from another dimension? Or from our own future? I've been watching her adventures since I was twelve, does that make me a voyeur? WHAT DO I DO.}

Um. I'm a big fan?

[Laugh!]

I've seen and heard a lot of things, but I'm not sure I'll ever get used to some people thinking I'm a fictional character.

And for the record, my theory is that all realities have some points of commonality. So, what's reality in one universe may be fiction in another.
i_speak_softly: (Oh you're not attacking that's great.)

[Laugh along with you.] It's not so bad! People frequently think I'm a hallucination. {Can't believe I'm talking to UHURA.}

Infinite universes. All possible combinations. "The Other Tiger" indeed.

I'll admit, you and your brothers are some of the weirder people I've encountered, here or anywhere. ((Am I that big a deal?))

I think it's safe to say this place proves the theory of infinite universes beyond a shadow of a doubt.
i_speak_softly: (I have a theory...)

Can I take that as a compliment? {You're smart and strong and you travel in space OH GOD I HOPE SHE DIDN'T SEE THAT.}

If there's an infinite number of universes, there also must be an infinite number of recombinant nexuses... right?

[She has to laugh, and can't stop the thought from forming.] ((Good thing Spock's not jealous...))

Well, it wasn't an insult, personally I have no problem with "weird".

And I should think so. That's not really my line of scholarship, though.

[Dropping those subjects. The idea of trying to contact people outside the barrier makes him think of something else.]

Lieutenant, I have to ask... what do you think of this translation magic? Talk about getting automated out of a job.

[Smile.]

My job is so much more than translation. I doubt anyone will ever come up with a computer that can translate cultural nuance better than a living, breathing, carbon-based life form.

Besides, a computer can't prevent Captain Kirk from starting interplanetary wars with his blundering come-ons.

[Facepalm forever.] ... All true.

What kind of message will you send? When you get the radio working?
